| dovif: what is the reply to 20. RG1?
I am thinking
If 20.... QH3+, 21 QH2, BF3, 22 RG2
If 20.... BF3+, 21 RG2
he is only 1P down

| think: I might play the opening move in one minute online play, but nothing serious. It is astonishing that someone master-strength played it. |

| Timothy Glenn Forney: This just simply breaks all theory of sound opening moves, and black punishes him for it. |

| al wazir: If 20. Rf1 then 20...Ne3:
A) 21. Rf2 Bf3+ 22. Rxf3 Qxf3+ 23. K moves Re8, with Re2 to follow. B) 21. Nc3 Nxf1 22. Rxf1 Bf3+ 23. Rxf3 Qxf3+ 24. K moves (24. Qg2 Qxg2+ 25. Kxg2, and black is up an exchange and a ) 24...Re8, with 25...Re1 or Re2 to follow. C) 21. Qf2 Nxf1 22. Qxg3 (22. Qxf1 Bf3+) Nxg3+, and black is a piece up. If I had been white I would have played on a few more moves. |

| CapablancaFan: The Barnes Opening: Hammerschlag? Lol. This guy C Desmarais set chess opening theory back at least 200 years. 2001? This game was actually played in the 21rst century? |

| Zivildiener: <How come Short crushed Fritz 6 in '01 before and there wasn't a program (maybe Fritz 7 was out but this was in February) stronger than Fritz 6.>
afaik short crushed fritz 6 in tournament chess (loooong time settings) but lost against whoever (I follow the 'proofs' of a chess engine, it looks like it for me) in rapid chess with shorter time control.... |

| Peligroso Patzer: In Andrew Soltis's very interesting book "Catalog of Chess Mistakes" at page 152 he gives a game (D. Brown vs. Kramer, Philadelphia 1976) that begins 1. f3 (!? per Soltis) e5 2. Kf2 (!? again per Soltis) that White wins in 38 moves. The primary lesson he seeks to impart from the game is a warning against an overconfident attitude. (Soltis speculates that Black must have imagined, after White's weird opening, that his [Black's] position "would win by itself".) |
